Plot Summary

1914, East Africa. Smelling of gin captain Charlie arrives on his boat to the village, where the Christian mission Reverend Samuel and his unmarried sister Rose, who among the wild African jungle behave as if still in good old England. The first choice for the lead roles were John mills and Bette Davis. Later, in 1938, Bette Davis was intended to partner with David Niven. From the beginning John Huston insisted on location shooting. In search of a river similar to the one that was described in the novel Forester, he logged thousands of miles on a plane crossing Africa from end to end, until he stopped in the Belgian Congo. In an era when shooting on location was not common, it was kind of a feat, given that in fact most of the film consists of dialogue. According to Houston, shooting on location was the only way to make the film believable and authentic. Even when the shooting took place in studios, Houston strove to make natural.

Leeches, trailers for Charlie, was made of clay, and mold, spanning it, rubber.

The current ending of the film did not appear immediately. The writer James Agee had a heart attack and he could not finish the script until the end. Houston had to extricate himself. Before was invented the final scenario, we considered three: rose and Charlie makes a British warship
