Plot Summary
Did You Know?
The film is based on the eponymous bestseller (1951) James Jones.
In 2002, the film was included in the national registry of films.
The Italian-American Frank Sinatra, reading the novel by James Jones, really wanted to play the role of the Italian American Maggio. He fell asleep in the Studio and the head of the Studio "Columbia pictures" Harry Cohn telegrams signed "Maggio", but Kon was afraid to take in a serious drama non-professional actor, who "danced and sang with Gene Kelly." Ava Gardner, who was familiar with his wife CONA, Joanna, asked her to help and allow her husband to pass the audition. Though after all the auditions for the role was approved by Eli Wallach, he subsequently refused the role, exchanging her production of "Camino Real" on Broadway. Despite the fact that Frank Sinatra got the part only 8 thousand dollars. (compared to 130 thousand dollars. for his role eight years earlier in the film "anchors aweigh"), the prize award enabled him in triumph to return to show business and resurrect his career, which steadily went downhill.
For the role of Karen Holmes was invited to Joan Fontaine, but she declined for family reasons. Later Joan was greatly saddened, as her career soon went into decline. From Joan Crawford had to be abandoned after she said that her beauty can capture only one operator with whom she worked on the previous film. In the end, the female roles were approved by Deborah Kerr and Donna reed.
Montgomery Clift did not know how to box and refused to take Boxing lessons before shooting, so in all scenes with fights it replaces stand-in that you can see a careful viewing of the film.
