The film is based on a novel by Boileau-Narsezhaka "that which became" (Celle qui n etait plus, 1952).

The rights to the novel by Boileau-Narsezhaka, which shot the film, I wanted to get Alfred Hitchcock, but it was too late for a few hours. As a consolation, Boileau and Narsezhaka especially for Hitchcock wrote the novel "D'entre les Morts" ("dead"), which he made the film "Vertigo" (1958).
The shooting of the film was conducted in the utmost secrecy, and he ends addressed to the audience by request upon leaving the cinema not to repeat what he saw, so as not to spoil the fun for those who of the film haven't seen.
Clouzot, in accordance with its directing principles, tried to achieve the maximum from the actors psychological truth: it came down to the fact that Merissa was really immersed with the head into the bath. In the suitcase, however, took his stand-in.
