Plot Summary
Did You Know?
The basis of the script was taken the Mickey Spillane novel about detective Mike hammer (1952). Since the novel was about drugs, it is officially declared unfit for screening. To circumvent this difficulty, screenwriter A. I. Bezzerides completely transformed the story, stuffed his nearbye cliches and fears of the nuclear age. It was he who invented hot "nuclear suitcase" and the apocalyptic ending, but at the same time moved the action from new York to California.
The girl on the freeway and a Secretary of the hero played Debs.
The shooting took place in Los Angeles, many neighborhoods and institutions that were in the frame, was already destined for demolition. Thus, the film can serve as a guide to the California metropolis at the crossroads of different eras.
In anticipation of the release of the film, Aldrich has performed in the New York Herald Tribune article in which tried to placate the fans of Mike hammer, alarmed at the careless attitude to the literary source. Road movie in wide release was thorny. Adherents of public morals sent to the Director the petition, which is required to make the film more than 30 changes.
In 1999, the film was listed on the national registry of films.
