The film is set in Germany and begins in 1932. Young people Lissie and Alfred married and they have a child. Unemployment and meager existence forced Alfred to join the Nazi party, where he begins to rise quickly on a career ladder. Lissie is forced to watch as her beloved turns from a normal father in a bloody executioner.
