Did You Know?

The film is based on the novel by Shirley Jackson (1959).

After reading the novel Shirley Jackson "the haunting", directed by Robert wise friend suggested to the writer Nelson Gidding to recycle a book into a screenplay. Gidding thought — for example sensational tape "Innocent" — all the supernatural incidents in the book can be explained by mental illness "homeless" character, bent on the idea of their own home. A conversation with Shirley Jackson convinced him otherwise.

Work on the script took six months. Gidding left out a big part of the mystique, to minimize the number of active individuals and moved almost all of the action in "bad" house. At the beginning of the film was planned to give the scene Theodora emotional breakup with his girlfriend that would not leave doubts in sexual orientation first.

Under the terms of the expiring contract Robert wise had to make one more film for MGM studios, which agreed to Finance the "horror" only on condition that its budget will not exceed $1 million In order to save on tax deductions the shooting took place at an English Studio MGM. A condition of granting tax incentives was the participation in the filming of local actors. Studio executives told protosevich lesbian overtones of the relationship of the girls and had banned the Actresses in the frame to touch each other hands.

In search of a suitable house for the filming wise asked the enthusiasts of the paranormal list of old houses, where, according to rumors, had seen the Ghost. He opted for Ettington hall, the estate of the Victorian era in the County of Warwickshire.

Actress Julie Harris has long been interested in parapsychology and without hesitation agreed to play the role of Eleanor. During the filming she was depressed and had trouble getting along with colleagues, which vinyl is not enough serious attitude to the project. Later it became clear that the overwrought emotional state of the actress lends additional credibility to the image of Eleanor.

In 1990, the telemagnate Ted Turner to attract a younger audience planned to paint black and white movies of classic Hollywood. Learning that "Ghost house" is a plan for color-coding, Robert wise with reference to the terms of the contract was able to block colorization of the tape.
