Plot Summary

Ocean without end and without boundary. The uninhabited islet. The heat, palm trees, bananas, wild boars, a spring of fresh water — and a mysterious cave... It was on this island squad gets the boys, survivors of the crash. An unexpected twist of fate is pushing many of them forget about everything: first — the discipline and order, then — on friendship and honesty and in the end — and about human nature itself.

Choosing the cast, the Director Peter brook has watched more than 3,000 boys.

11-year-old Hugh Edwards got the role of piggy by writing the Director a letter in which the Director has read: "Dear sir, I am fat and wear glasses."

At the initial stage of the shooting period Peter brook to a considerable extent without script in encouraging its young actors the ability to improvise.

The Director has shot more than 60 hours of footage, which subsequently was edited ninety-minute film.

Tom Chapin (Jack) for the year completely got rid of my English accent, and for that reason fragments the role of Jack voiced the other boy.

The American distributors insisted to cut the film length to 90 minutes, and these requirements had to obey. Was cut one episode of the fire and several episodes develops a line of Ralph.

In 1996, thirty-five years later, the BBC made a documentary about the creation of the painting, again uniting all key actors and crew members on the same beach on the Caribbean sea, where the shooting took place. Among other things it tells about the fate of starring in the movie child actors — all of them have stooped to an acting career is only one James Aubrey, who played Ralph.

The film received a X rating from the British censors, according to which none of the child actors could not be present at its premiere, although they participated in the filming and, somehow, were familiar with the footage.

The main part of filming took place on the coast of the island of Puerto Rico and the nearby island of Vieques from April 17 to August 1961.
