Place and time: Virginia in the Civil war era. The hero of the film refuses to support the Confederacy, he was opposed to slavery, but doesn't want to be on the side of northerners, because it rejects war. When his son is taken prisoner, Stewart goes in search of the boy. He now saw with their own eyes the horrors of war and the result is forced to take a clear position.
