The daughter of market traders Joanna falls in love with Andrzej, a poor artist of the Barbican, and Joanna loves a market speculator, Ada. Father Joanna hatches a plan to marry his daughter to marry and leave the dowry (sheltered from taxes revenues) in the family, buying all the paintings of Andrzej to make it rich.
