The film is based on the novel of Nikolai Gogol.

The idea of the film "Viy" is owned by the famous Soviet Director, at that time the Director of the film company Mosfilm, Ivan Pyriev. Only because of a severe lack of time he suggested to shoot a picture of two students of the advanced directing courses of the Union of cinematographers of the USSR Georgy Kropachev and Konstantin Ershov.

Shooting the film was made in Bogorodchany district of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast (now Ukraine). However, filmed on location material was disappointed with the film, being "too realistic". So to work it was decided to attract well-known film Director-storyteller Alexander Ptushko. As a result, a lot of material filmed by Yershov and Kropachev was cut, a number of ideas remained unrealized. Have been changed and the shape of the main monsters of the film — the Wii.

Alexander Zavyalov was originally approved for the role Pannochki, immediately after the start of filming was seriously ill. In the end, the future husband of the actress, film Director Rezo Esadze demanded that she refused the role.

Initially, the role of Khoma Brut was planned by Mikhail Kokshenov.
