The film is based on the novel by Pierre Boulle planet of the apes (La Planéte des singes, 1963).

Composer Jerry goldsmith came up with an interesting way to create the right sounds — just rolled the balls in stainless steel. Thus the sound became organic.

John chambers, the Creator of "monkey makeup", among other things, invented the pointed ears of Mr. Spock from "Star trek."

Jeff Burton played a Dodge, fainted from the heat while filming scenes in the desert.

When Charlton Heston uttered his famous speech about the "smelly feet", he had a terrible flu. So the voice actor sounded hoarse. In addition to all the suffering in the scene, when his character was being chased by monkeys, he had to run half naked through a thicket of poison ivy.

Actors playing apes had while eating to look in the mirror and drink through a straw so as not to spoil the makeup.

The script of the film women savage went Topless, but Fox they were "dressed" in order not to create problems with the rating.

The film was shot in Arizona.

The final film differs significantly from the ending of the novel — in the original the protagonist returns to Earth, but discovers that she is also under the control monkeys. At the end of the film he saw the remains of the statue of Liberty, aware that planet of the apes is Earth (which suggests a possible destruction of human civilization in suicidal nuclear war, and not as a result of the uprising of the apes, as stated in the course of the film).
