Did You Know?

The film is based on the works of M. A. Bulgakov "Run" and "the White guard" and "Black sea".

"Constantinople" was filmed in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

For "dreams" Khludov long sought nature. At first, operators suggested that the salty lake Baskunchak near Volgograd, but there were no military units, the soldiers of which were constantly used in Soviet films as free extras. In the end, these strange shots were made in sand pits under Lyubertsy.

Initially, the role of Khludov was going to do Gleb Strizhenov.

The role of Charnoty auditioned Vladimir Vysotsky.

The role auditioned Golubkov, Alexander Kaidanovsky, Valentin Smirnitsky, Stanislav Lyubshin, Boris Khimichev, Lev Prygunov, Vladimir Mashchenko and Vladislav Dvorzhetsky, who later played Khludov.

The role of the Seraphim auditioned Nina Maslova.

Name of the character Alexei Batalov, Sergei Pavlovich Golubkov, is almost an anagram of the name of Bulgakov.

In the USSR, the Running play was not officially prohibited, however the Directors to apply to it is not recommended, because since the Stalinist era was reaching anti-Soviet train.

The original script was called "Dreams of Russia", which is then replaced by the "Path to the abyss", which returned to copyright "Running".

For the crew of the film was arranged indoor viewing banned in the Soviet Union the film "Doctor Zhivago" (1965, dir. David Lean).

Consultant of the film was Elena Bulgakov (the third wife and Muse of Mikhail Bulgakov), which Naumov called the mystical woman and said, "I don't understand, our relationship is a dream or reality?..". In his own words, Elena Sergeevna was the link between the crew of the film and Mikhail Afanasievich.

Without samples of the film were approved by Evgeni Evstigneev, Mikhail Ulyanov.

Shooting scenes card game was shot in a cold pavilion "Mosfilm" at night (the only time Evstigneev and Ulyanov could find the time after the evening performances).

Evgeni Evstigneev during filming, used every opportunity to take a NAP. If had adjourned at four minutes, three of them he slept.

Valery Zolotukhin in the film plays the role of a pop singer, performing the song "It was by the sea", lyrics by Igor Severyanin in the manner of Alexander Vertinsky.

The General plan of Constantinople with no actors was filmed in Istanbul "underground" for lack of a permit religious organizations. Shooting was a handheld camera so as not to be considered a professional. Because of the dead battery turned out to not shoot 24 frames per second, and only 10 -- 12.

Urban scenery "Constantinople" was shot in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, partly in the scenery at "Mosfilm".

The scene where the character played by Mikhail Ulyanov in his underpants is on city streets, shot in Paris. However, the actor in his underwear few eyebrows.

A number of scenes filmed on the territory of Novospassky monastery in Moscow.

After filming in Paris, it was necessary to sign the final act on the cost of the crew from a lawyer, who put on the document his signature: "your Honor confirm that all charges are correct". I had to explain that the Union of "world renowned law of" don't know for accountant only need a stamp. The French lawyer was offended, but still managed to put the required stamp.

According to legend, from contact with the shelf, the film was saved by the game of dominoes. Vladimir Naumov and Mikhail Ulyanov was on a plane from Czechoslovakia to Moscow, where he was invited to the first salon for games of dominoes with members of the Politburo, which lacked two partners for the game. Played for fun: the winners had the right to ask for what you want. Intellectuals, being perfect ignoramus in this game, still won two of the three parties, after which "Running" was allowed.

Elena Bulgakov made the film the scene when the undertaker runs a finger across the cheek of one of the white officers, and said, "you Need to shave! And then the dead will not be handy to shave!".

For the actor Vladislav Dvorzhetsky work on the role of Khludov began with scenes inside the train (Khludov in delirium, it haunted by the Ghost of a hanged soldier).

The scene where the horseman galloping lifts off the ground a fallen red flag, took one shot (the shooting took place in the Carpathians, where only finished shooting the film "Waterloo" directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, and the horses were so exhausted that they refused to act).

The organization of the filming of a scene of cockroach racing was unsuccessfully involved in "trainers" and "Cybernetics", until I remembered about the cockroaches that are always running in the dark when lights are switched on. For shooting on a pool table organized small boxes with flaps, covered inside with black velvet. The design worked so precisely.

The Chairman of Goskino after watching the film, said that Alov and Naumov did white guard romance: "Yes, you are crazy! White you suffer! And Carnota generally positive hero! Causing self love when you should hate!". The premiere of "Races" assigned to "Russia," was canceled.
