The film is based on the novel by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov "the Twelve chairs" (1928).

The novel "the Twelve chairs" was going to film Georgy Danelia, but then "burned out" and gave shooting Leonid Gaidai, which is about this long dreamed of.

For the role of Ostap auditioned more than 20 actors, among them Vladimir Vysotsky, Alexey Batalov, Oleg Borisov, Valentin Gaft, Andrei Mironov. Archil Gomiashvili was found in the province. Due to the disease (according to another version — because of the strong Caucasian accent) the actor was not able to voice Bender in the film, he speaks in the voice of Yuri sarantseva.

Candidate Archil Gomiashvili did not approve "of the state". Upstairs began to be indignant: "Why Bender will become a Georgian?" What Leonid Gaidai immediately retorted: "but dad Ostap turetskopoddanny Why is the mom not to be a Georgian?"

The role of Madame Gritsatsuyeva could play Galina Volchek and Nonna Mordjukova. But Mordjukova for this role did not fit, seemed not funny. Preference was going to give Galina Volchek, but the sound Vladimir Krachkovsky from the team of Leonid Gaidai brought to the set his wife, a student of VGIK Natalia Krachkovsky. Gaidai looked at her and said, "Here it is, the poet's dream."

Savely Kramarov played in both the Soviet film "12 chairs". In this film, he played a one-eyed chess player, and in the film 1976 — a locksmith Polesov.

Georgi Vitsin played in both the Soviet film "12 chairs". In this movie he was played by fitter Mechnikov, and in the film 1976 — Bezenchuk.

Before the shooting, Sergei Filippov already began to have severe headaches from discovered a few years earlier of brain cancer, so Leonid Gaidai invited Rostislav Plyatt, establishing him as the Kitties. However, Filippov declared that will act in any case. The situation was resolved when the rumors about the intense interest in the Filippov came to Plyatt, and he lost the role of Kisa Philippi. But the dress is also not left without a role. In the film, he reads the text from the author. Despite the odds, Sergey Filippov after filming was successfully treated and lived for another 20 years, playing his last role, also in Leonid Gaidai.

Confirmation from Mikhail Pugovkin to play the role of father Theodore Leonid Gaidai waited three weeks while the actor consulted his mother, Natalia Pudovkina, a deeply religious man. The role of the roguish priest's son was afraid of hurting her feelings. Mom gave permission.

The scene with the set of General Popova had to withdraw amid a storm. The film was already finished, and storm it all started. The sea was troubled only at the end of October, when it was very cold. During the filming of this episode, Michael Pugovkin got sciatica.

The film "12 chairs" was the last film by Leonid Gaidai in the filmography of Yuri Nikulin.

A monument to Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov, shown at the end of the film, in fact, never existed.

In the movie dough together with Ostap Bender dances lezginka, to earn money. This is the second time hero Sergei Filippov dancing lezginka. The first time was in the film Eldar Ryazanov "carnival night".

The participation of the vocal Quartet "accord".
