Filming began in may 1970 in Ostend and Bruges, although the film is set in winter.
At the insistence of one of the film companies, Maya Films, the film's title for the French rental was changed from the original French. "Le rouge aux lèvres" in French. "Les Lèvres rouges". Later in different countries, a large number of different names for local hire: from Frank "operational" ital. "Vestala di Satane" ("Satanic virgins"), more moderate eng. "The Promise of Red Lips" ("the Promise of red lips", an alternative name for the British rental) indefinite eng. "Erzebeth, Blood Love" ("Erzsebet bloody love"), and English. "Children of the Night" ("Children of darkness"). The most frequently used option was for the American rental eng. "Daughters of Darkness" ("Daughter of darkness").
The film was made and voiced entirely in English, despite the fact that most of the cast was a native of France, Germany and Flanders. Unlike most "genre" European films of the 1970s with subsequent scoring were not involved other actors. Independent dubbing actors for whom English was not their native language, resulted in a marked accent, especially from Delphine Seyrig, Andrea Rau and Paul Messer.
