The film deeply, but with humor reveals trends in Japanese society. Looking through the eyes of the youngest son of one of the branches of the Japanese family, the audience can see simultaneously the boy's story, family history and the history of Japan. Various important ceremonies of the family seems for many years: anniversaries, weddings, funerals, etc. Different groups within the family reflect the different social groups in Japanese society.
