Plot Summary
Did You Know?
The film is based on a novel by Henri charger Motylek (Papillon, 1969).
For Steve McQueen it was the second prison drama in which he played the hero-the fugitive: the first was the movie "the Great escape" (1963).
In the original novel Louis Dega a secondary character, remaining outside of the story in the first half of the book. The film is Degas was one of the main characters.
Creating an image of Louis Dega Dustin Hoffman was inspired by the image of the co-author of the screenplay Dalton TRUMBO. This is especially true of alienation and shyness, the legendary screenwriter who just struck Hoffman when meeting TRUMBO.
In order to properly see through the thick glasses of his hero, Dustin Hoffman had to wear special contact lenses.
Despite the fact that the original book Henri charger is autobiographical, the French in French Guiana unanimously claim that a large part of the history of the Papillon no more than fiction.
Documented that Henri Charriere was imprisoned in the prison of Saint-Laurent and may have escaped from there, but he was never in custody on the famous Devil's island, although the prison settlement on this island really existed.
