Violence begets violence. The wife and daughter of new York businessman Paul Kersey became victims of the gang of street punks. Instead of relying on the police, burning desire for revenge Kersey takes up arms, and he administers justice.
It overlooks the main street night in new York and begins the hunt for vandals and thieves. The fame of the ruthless "new York's avenger" spread throughout the country.

Dino di Laurentiis also wanted to call the film "The Sidewalk Vigilante" (which probably would have puzzled translators, because "Vigilante" little known outside the US the word is synonymous with the word "vigilante", which is not quite suited for a given picture). He thought that the word "death" in the title will turn away from the picture of the audience. But then he changed his mind.
