The role of Paul Kersey was originally offered to Steve McQueen, and Frank Sinatra, but both refused.
Dino di Laurentiis also wanted to call the film "The Sidewalk Vigilante" (which probably would have puzzled translators, because "Vigilante" little known outside the US the word is synonymous with the word "vigilante", which is not quite suited for a given picture). He thought that the word "death" in the title will turn away from the picture of the audience. But then he changed his mind.
The role of Paul Kersey was offered and Clint Eastwood, but he said that it is better in this role to remove Gregory Peck.
