The film was shot in County Wicklow (Ireland), and the initial frames of the film the landscape of the Earth of the future was filmed near the home of Director John Boorman in Ireland.
Initially the role of zed was supposed to play American Burt Reynolds, but the nomination was rejected because of the illness of the actor.
The name "Zardoz" was formed from two words taken from the title of the famous tale by Lyman Frank Baum "the wonderful wizard of Oz".
During the signing of the papers the Irish government initially refused the Director and producers to bring into the country the weapons needed for filming, because of the high terrorist activity at that time.
The final shots of the painting, where old Zed and Consuella die and turn into skeletons, day three times in a row. First time damaged film, second assistant Director accidentally exposed the negatives. These delays are extremely annoying actors who had to stay in makeup for quite a long time.

After finishing the filming of the movie "Diamonds are forever" (1971) Sean Connery refused to play James bond. As told Burman, at the time Connery was difficult to find work in movies, so Boorman was able to hire Connery very cheaply for this project. The money was allocated a little, and to cut spending Sean Connery refused the services of a chauffeur and he was here in his car.
The Director of the film appears here in a small cameo in the role of a slave, engaged in agriculture, and shot the hero Connery.
