The plot was adopted the story of "Fatal exit" (Fatal Exit), Brand Peplow, a native of the East coast of Africa.

The latest film from English-speaking trilogy, Michelangelo Antonioni, filmed in the framework of the contract with Carlo Ponti, under the aegis of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

In English-speaking countries the film is known under the name "Passenger" (eng. The Passenger).

Initially the film was planned to shoot in the Amazon jungle (and also in Sardinia and in Rome), however, the preparatory period lasted for 2 years. Run in the jungle was expensive, and producer Carlo Ponti stated that it will not be able to Finance the film. It was then decided to make a film with the same actors, but in more accessible terms of the logistics of the Sahara.

The film was shot outside the Studio — in Chad, Algeria, London, Munich and Spain. Technically the most challenging was shooting in the Sahara: in a scorching desert, the film had to be transported in the refrigerator.

Despite the compressed schedule of filming, Antonioni took a lot more material than was necessary for mounting of the film. The final version was not included, in particular, explicit love scene between Nicholson and Schneider. At first, I was mounted on a 4-hour version of the film, and then asked the editor Franco Arcalli to reduce it by more than a half hour. This version was shown in Europe but for the us premiere of she, in turn, are also subjected to reductions.

According to the testimony of Nicholson, actress Maria Schneider has spent days filming in a drugged daze, so sometimes he had to hold her so she wouldn't fall in front of the camera.

On the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the film was released in limited release in the United States and some other countries.
