The idea of the story was the massacre in Oradour-sur-Glane, when a battalion of Panzer-Grenadier of the Waffen-SS "Führer" divisions "Das Reich" cut the population of the village: men, women and children (a total of 642 victims), which was the mass killing of civilians committed by German troops on French soil in the history of France.
The film was shot in the village of Bruniquel, Department of the tarn and Garonne and Montauban.
After the film Philippe noiret became the first actor, who received the award "Cesar" for best actor.
