Thousands of seekers of a better arrive at the beginning of the century the fertile lands of Texas, where a bumper crop had been grown. Among the settlers and the two lovers, posing as brother and sister. And when the farmer falls in love with this beautiful woman, the lovers decide to start a risky game with him

The whole movie was shot either in the morning or in the evening twilight. Terrence Malick wanted to see in the frame the white sky and did not want to see the sun.

Almost immediately after the start of filming Terrence Malick abandoned their own script about a year and filmed almost one of actor improvisation. He wanted the actors themselves "found the story".

John Travolta, al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman turned down the role of bill.

The operator Nestor Almendros because of vision problems the film was shot almost blindly. Before each take his assistant was doing the "Polaroid" that the operator is examined under a powerful magnifying glass.

A lonely farmhouse on the horizon, surrounded by fields of wheat (this visual image runs through the film) resembled that of the great American artist Andrew Wyeth "Christina's World".

Terrence Malick spent two years assembling this film.

The episode where bill falls in the water, was filmed in a large aquarium in the living room sissy Spacek (Terrence Malick worked with sissy Spacek in my previous 1973 film "Badlands").

Full-scale shooting of the film took place in Alberta (Canada). All buildings, including the farmer's house was built by designer Jack Fisk of plywood.

The book that leafing through Linda, the farmer's house — an illustrated release of "the jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling.

Haskell Wexler, which is listed in the credits as an additional operator, said in a private conversation, well-known American film critic Roger Ebert Stiftung that he shot most of the film.

Footage of the flying swarms of locusts were removed in the following way: over the fields, circling helicopter, with which huge amounts of scattered ordinary peanuts, and the actors at the same time stepped backwards. In the finished film, this material is simply scrolled in the opposite direction.
