The film is based on the novel by Scott Marble, written in 1896. However, the scenario is based on real events, later than the book Marble. August 29, 1900 when four gunmen from the gang of "Hole in the wall", led by the legendary hero of many subsequent westerns Butch Cassidy, attacked a train # 3 Union Pacific, passing table Rock in Wyoming. The bandits forced the conductor to unhook the passenger cars, then blew the safe in the mail car and fled, taking $ 5,000 in cash.
Edwin S. porter was inspired by the famous Malinowski "Trip to the moon", was eager to make a similar picture using unusual techniques. The film uses such novelties as cross cutting (change of scenes, creating the impression of simultaneity screen action), double exposure. Finally, shooting on location instead of a purely Studio-created a complete sense of reality.
The picture consists of 14 scenes in November, 1903, was filmed in new Jersey, where the New Studio of Thomas A. Edison. In particular, the train moves on the railway Lackawanna, near Paterson, new Jersey. All the other scenes of the "Great train robbery" filmed in the Park of Essex County near West orange, new Jersey.
The use of the most modern special effects and especially the final scene plunged viewers premiere in a state of shock.
