The film is an adaptation of the novel "Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Initially the transformation of Jekyll was planned to transfer without the help of makeup, relying solely on Barrymore's ability to contort his face. Clearly seen, as in the scene where Hyde first back into Jekyll, his finger falls off makeup, having a convulsion Barrymore.
John Barrymore himself invented a suit of a spider, which crawled slowly on the bed, where he slept with his DoppelgangeR, is shown by double exposure.
