"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is considered the first full-fledged horror film.

The name "Caligari" was taken by writers from the correspondence of Stendhal.

Unique artistic design of the film and used in this scenery created by artists of the expressionist group "Der Sturm" — Herman Varm, Walter Roerig and Walter Reimann, who had an innovative idea that movies should look like "animated drawings".

Originally the film was supposed to be Fritz lang but he by the time was busy in another project. However, it was lang's idea to 'loop' the plot of the film episodes in the crazy house and thereby radically change its interpretation.

The film was shot entirely far from the reality of the scenery with distorted proportions, which is explained by the desire to depict the consciousness of a mentally ill person, not adequately perceive the reality.
