Laundress Amanda Afflick writes a story about a shirt given to the wash of Horace Greensmith. She tells his companions that the shirt purportedly belongs to her rich lover of sir Horace, who was kicked out of the family castle, his father. When Greensmith comes to pick up the linen, she persuades him to play along with her fantasies. He agrees to pretend to be her lover, but then, realizing how pathetic the girl leaves Amanda, breaking her rosy dreams.
