The actor in the main role of a Baby — five year old Jackie Coogan — Chaplin found at the scene where the child performed on an equal footing with adults. After the chain of adventures of a foundling finds a resident of the slum poor Charlie, who teaches the child what he knows.

Did You Know?

Who plays the role of the Kid Jackie Coogan was the son of a vaudeville actor Jack Coogan Sr. (in the film he played the role of Devil in "Paradise" episode). The Studio "First National" signed a contract with Coogan senior, thereby giving Chaplin the opportunity to remove the Coogan Jr.

The Director's insistence Chaplin can be judged from the fact that in the finished film includes less than 2% of the removed material - the ratio is extremely unusual for cinema at the time.

The film was completed in 1920, soon after Chaplin's divorce from his first wife Mildred Harris, who was tried by the court to confiscate in their favor the footage. Chaplin was forced to take film from the Studio in salt lake city, where, hiding from the bailiffs, finished cutting the film.

Chaplin filmed "the Kid" in the framework of the contract with the company "First National", which included the creation of eight two-part short films. Although "Baby" was a feature-length film (6 pieces), the company tried to "read" it as korotkometrazhnyy and pay for it Chaplin tripled a lesser amount than he expected 500 thousand dollars instead of 1.5 million. Not wanting to accept these terms, Chaplin took with him a copy of the film and traded with the company until, until he achieved an acceptable conditions.

"Baby" was in the office with unbelievable success and has become the second box office film in 1921 (it was only ahead of the film of Rex Ingram's"Four horsemen of the Apocalypse" with Rudolph Valentino).

In 1971, Chaplin has released the updated version of "Baby" with specially written for film music. The musical leitmotif of the film was the quote from Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony.

Originally the film was called "the Homeless" (eng. The Waif), but in the process of working on it Chaplin renamed it "Baby."

Chaplin was so carried away by shooting that broke all the possible deadlines of work and his contract with the Studio "First National" was under threat of termination. The Studio still gave Charlie more time to the end of the film, when I saw the process of filming and game Jackie Coogan.

The shooting of the film took 154 days, and 118 working days required for its installation.

In December 2011 the film was included in the national register of USA movies as "of great cultural, historic or aesthetic significance".
