Did You Know?

The film was restored in 1969.

"Strike" is the first full-length work of Eisenstein.

As extras participated pupils of Studio of the proletcult and the young workers of Moscow plants.

Finished the script of "Strike" Eisenstein brought to the "First hosenfabrik", which is located in Moscow, Zhitnaya street in the former Studio of Alexander Khanzhonkov. There he was given two movie samples. Both he failed: it was filmed "theatrical" and long pieces. During the first test, Eisenstein filmed the crowd during the second scene with the interrogation of a revolutionary. The top leadership of the state feared that I will turn the "Strike" plotless "montage of attractions", whereby the picture could fall. Therefore, the state after an unsuccessful trial with the Director in a hurry to leave. Then Boris Mikhin and Eduard Tisse secret from Eisenstein wrote a letter to the leadership of the factory with request to grant him a third trial under their financial responsibility, referring to the actor as "very interesting person", in which they believe. The third attempt was successful. The footage was even included in the original film. It was the scene where the punks whistling his "king" gets out of the many dug into the ground barrels.

The full script of "the Strike" took exactly 10 pages, four of which were the prologue. The Prolog was not removed. In the movie he was just the latest words used as a caption: "At the factory all is quiet. But..." the Whole scenario was divided into 235 points (in the first version — 146), labeled with sequential numbers. Each item corresponded to one specific frame in the picture. On one of the pages of the script I wrote in French: "les effets Menager" (Rus. Be careful with the effects).

The original painting was conceived as the fifth part of vosmiseriynogo cycle of strips of the revolutionary struggle, called "the dictatorship." But the other parts were never realized. This series seemed to the Director "most popular" and "effective", so the first started to remove it. In its concept of the "dictatorship" was supposed to cover the following topics (each topic corresponds to a certain film) : 1) the smuggling literature

To remove, I started with the epilogue, which, in the end, were not included in the picture. It was assumed that there will be included the documentary episode: a demonstration on red square in honor of may day. So, on this day in 1924 Eisenstein made his first films as Director. The footage was a documentary and recorded the first in the history of the Soviet may day demonstration of workers. And is closer by the autumn I began shooting a "factory" of movie scenes. For nature was selected Kolomna plant, which then came Leon Trotsky. Eisenstein made his statement. These frames also were used for the epilogue. In the vast archives of the Director no of materials about the filming of Trotsky. According to "asinstalled" Vladimir Zabrodin he destroyed these materials after 1929, when it started antiracists campaign.

The shooting took place mostly in situ — in Moscow and its suburbs — with the exception of some scenes shot in the pavilions of the "First hosenfabrik". It is also known that one of the final scenes of the film were shot in a house-boat on the Pskov alley.

Alexander Antonov's role in the film was a debut movie.

The film was divided into six acts, which is quite typical for the Soviet cinema of the 1920-ies. This is explained by the insufficient development of the film industry of the time: in theaters had only one projector, and mechanics were forced every 10 minutes to change the bobbin, interrupting the viewing.

In 2008, the "Strike" was awarded the 26th place in the list of "100 best Russian films", compiled a Russian version of the Empire magazine and based on the views of 50 film critics and cinema journalists.

One of the most important, according to Eisenstein, episodes in the film, where the firemen to disperse the crowd, spraying workers with water from fire hoses, the Director demanded the crowd number more than a thousand people. But the management of the plant refused to involve shooting as many people arguing that the impossibility of their rational use. Then Mikhin, "went on the cunning", with orders to bring to work only five hundred people, but telling the actor that performs the request.
