Plot Summary

"New times" is an emotional, self-comic vein, the response to distortions of the machine age. Little Tramp does not want to be a "cog" in a huge mega-machine of industrial production, and so like him in human society. Charlie fights with stupid rich, all-powerful police, soulless chiefs of the Assembly line. Sometimes he wins in these battles, but often loses, in the end, fearlessly goes to meet the dawn. Although the "New times" is considered the last silent film of Charlie Chaplin, in this Little Tramp for the first and last time found a voice. However, he did not speak, but sang in the final frames of the picture, symbolizing the farewell to the great period of silent cinema.

Did You Know?

"Feeding the machine" was invented by Chaplin in 1916 for a feature film about the journey to the moon. The film was conceived as a satire on technological progress, but has not been removed.

In the role of priest who visited the prison, starred British surgeon, Dr. Cecil Reynolds.

In an episode of the show in the crowd can see 3 poster in Russian: "Stand behind her", "Svaboda" (SIC), "liberty or death. Union."

Chaplin was accused of plagiarism of the film, Rene Clair "Our freedom" (1931), in particular the scene on the conveyor.

In 1989 the film was selected for preservation in the National register of USA movies.

The production of the film began in September 1933 and was completed on 12 January 1936

First, the film was conceived of sound, written dialogues, but Chaplin was unable to imagine the Tramp talking. And doubt about the dubbing for a foreign hire. Eventually, Chaplin left attempts to make sound film, and made "New times" in the style of a silent film with sparse dialogue.
