Did You Know?

The famous episode of the battle of lake Peipus was shot in the pavilion in the spring. Instead of ice was the foam.

The film was released with a poorly recorded soundtrack. The low quality of the recording is explained by the fact that the film was inserted in the draft version, which still had to be redubbed. But before this was done, the film with the rough sound looked Stalin and adopted in this form. Eisenstein did not dare to change anything in the film, successfully held such a high censorship.

Quotes from the film and video are used in other works. So the footage of the battle on the ice was the background for one scene of the Soviet-American film "Blue bird" in 1976, and in the film by Yuri Mamin's "Neptune Holiday" (1986) the scene waiting locals buses with foreign tourists is a verbatim repetition of the time before the battle — the approaching knight army. In the movie "Conan the barbarian" (USA, 1982) the armor of the villains created after the armor of the knights from "Alexander Nevsky".

In November 2006, the Russian channel "Culture" was shown a shortened version of the film, without a fragment, which is sung in the song "Arise, Russian people". This caused some concern and resentment among some viewers. Version of the channel said that the channel "Culture" has purchased this version of the film.

Gavriil Aleksic, one of the main characters of the film, could not participate in the battle of the ice, as he died a year before him, in 1241, during the assault Koporie.

In the scene of the knight's duel with the head of the order during the battle in the role of Nevsky Cherkasova was replaced by the General, Lev Dovator cavalry, who was one of the consultants of the film.

Especially for a film made was an exact copy of a medieval portable organ. It Catholic monk, dressed in black, plays during the battle.

Brother knights, under the Charter of the Order were required to wear beards. In the film they shaved chins.

In ancient Russia single girls hair braided in one braid, and after marriage unbraid it into two braids. And in the film unmarried girls: Olga, which woos Gavriil Aleksic and Vaska Buslaev, and Vasilisa — daughter of magistrates, hair braided in two braids.

Neither before the battle, nor to the solemn temple bells Prince Alexander in the film do not cross. But in those days, not sign of the cross, Orthodox people did not drink a glass of water. Such inaccuracies — a tribute to Soviet anti-religious policy is manifested in culture and art.

The film begins with scenes of fishing on lake Pleshcheyevo and dialogue of Alexander Nevsky with the Tatar baskaks. Eisenstein shot this scene in the homeland of Alexander Nevsky in the village of Gorodische near Pereslavl-Zalessky — a hill and the shaft of the settlement, where was then the princely chamber remained still.

"Alexander Nevsky" appeared in cinemas in 1938 and was a huge success (comparable, perhaps, from "Chapaev"). Sergei Eisenstein was awarded the Stalin prize and a doctor of arts degree without dissertation. However, shortly after the release of pictures on the screens it was removed from rental for reasons of political correctness to Germany, which during this period, the Soviet Union tried to establish a relationship. In 1941, after the beginning of the great Patriotic war, "Alexander Nevsky" has returned to screens with even more resounding success.
