The film is based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson "Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" (the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1886).
The initial selection of the Studio on the title dual role was Robert Donat.
Spencer Tracy was so eager to quickly start shooting, and refused offered him the lead role in the romantic Comedy "the Philadelphia story" (1940) (as a result it was replaced by Cary Grant).
Spencer Tracy originally wanted to be realistic to the history of his hero, saving her from a mystical plaque. The actor was disappointed that the producers bought the rights to the story in 1931, insisted on the traditional version of the story.
Ivy Peterson in the original story is missing this character is taken from the 1931 film.
The concept of two lovers Jekyll/Hyde, aristocratic Beatrix emery and ivy commoner Peterson, first appeared in the play "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" adapted by playwright T. R. Sullivan for stage actor of the nineteenth century by Richard Mansfield. In the original story does not mention any love interests Jekyll or Hyde.
Because of the action in 1941, the infamous Hays code most of the film had much to soften compared to the original 1931 film. For example, ivy Peterson of prostitutes became a servant in the bar.
Spencer Tracy wanted both heroines and Beatrix emery and ivy Peterson played by one actress and suggested for the role of Katharine Hepburn. According to the actor, such a move successfully would have reinforced the idea that good and evil lives in every human being.
Original Ingrid Bergman was invited to the Beatrix emery role and Lana Turner in the ivy Peterson. However, Ingrid Bergman felt the role of ivy is more interesting for himself and convinced the producers to change their Lana Turner roles.
The main female role was also auditioned Patricia Morison and Susan Hayward.
