Plot Summary

At the Institute of psychiatry comes a new Director, a renowned scholar Edwards. An employee of the Institute of Constance Petersen is showing not only professional interest, and they tied the romance. But the young Professor begins acting strangely, and soon Constance discovers that her lover is not who he claims to be — he is an impostor, an amnesiac. His real name is John Ballantyne, and everything points to the fact that he was a missing patient of Dr. Edwards and maybe he is the killer. Not believing that John is a criminal, Constance takes him to his old teacher Dr. Brulov. They hope studying the dreams of John, to reveal the secrets hidden in the depths of his consciousness

The dream sequence in the film is artist Salvador Dali. According to some sources, the film's producer David Selznick cut out all other scene created by Dali.

As usual, Hitchcock appears briefly in the film as a man with a cigar coming out of the Elevator in the hotel "Empire", about 37 minutes of the film.
